Half Life
Created in 1998 this true game of champions is not graphicaly superior any more but it's wide array of mods has made it a popular LAN game. The proper deathmatch is rarely played but mods such as Counter Strike and Day Of Defeat provide much entertainment for the attenders. The single player game is a long and rewarding experience with several gems that defined the post 1998 first person genre. Great examples of these are the train levels which sees you switching the tracks with your Revolver and gunning down assorted Aliens, great fun.
The deathmatch is fairly standard when compared to the Quake 3 engine games but the level editor is a thing of beauty and in tribute to it's glory I started work on Project-LAN-c which Al has since joined. With the Blue Shift high-defination pack to improve them the weaponry is superb, each one is unique and has it's uses and strengths as well as being fab looking and feeling.
